The Music of Underscore
The music for this performance was conceived and curated by Anika Vavic, emerging from a personal artistic idea rooted in dance. From this starting point, the concept took shape as a journey spanning the Baroque era and the present day, with dance as the connecting thread across centuries of music.
The programme opens with Bach’s English Suite, a sequence of Baroque dances, and continues through Beethoven toward Vienna — the city where the waltz found its true home. Franz Schubert’s Ländler and noble waltzes form the emotional and historical core of the program, laying the foundation for the Viennese waltz tradition that would later flourish.
Russian music broadens the perspective. Scriabin’s Waltz, Op. 38 is heard here alongside his late piano poem Vers la flamme (Toward the Flame), a work that seems to stretch musical form to its limits. Like a moth drawn irresistibly toward the flame, the music spirals toward ecstasy and transformation — an intensity that the waltz itself can also embody.
Romanticism enters through Schubert’s Kupelwieser Waltz, a wedding waltz arranged by the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, where love becomes audible. Love also resonates in the music of Brahms — like Beethoven, a Viennese by choice — whose works deepen the emotional landscape of the evening.
Shaped by Vienna — its dances, its nights, its endlessly turning waltzes — this program reflects Anika Vavic’s long-standing relationship with the city and its musical traditions. Together with Rémy Ballot, choreographers, and dancers, the curator brings classical masterworks into dialogue with contemporary dance, allowing past and present to meet in a single, flowing gesture.
