Bubbletecture
Our friends at ArtHouse Jersey are transforming the IFC2 plaza into an iridescent wonderland this late summer. Imagine eight-metre‑high shimmering bubbles, wrapped in bespoke sound and light – and our dancers in motion between them. It’s public art turned performative playground, ripe for all ages.
Artist Spotlight – Atelier Sisu
Sydney‑based duo Renzo B. Larriviere & Zara Pasfield (Atelier Sisu) create Bubbletecture, a poetic fusion of art, architecture, play and place. Their floating spheres respond to light and invite the public into a tactile, joyful encounter.
Choreographer – Jamaal Burkmar
“Music and movement in electric conversation” is how NSCD grad Jamaal Burkmar describes his signature style. From early acclaim for Ocean to winning the New Adventures Choreographer Award and touring UK with Extended Play, Burkmar brings bold, kinetic, music-driven movement seamlessly into this ethereal setting.
Dancers – Ballet d’Jèrri
Here’s where we come in! The BDJ dancers are stepping in to help animate this glowing playground with new choreography from Burkmar – a first‑of‑its‑kind site‑specific moment, free and open to all, every weekend across the Bubbletecture installation.

Open Class
BDJ Open Classes – Wednesday Evenings
We’re launching a new series of open dance classes on Wednesday evenings.
These sessions are designed for dancers with prior experience. The class will follow a simple, straightforward structure: accessible for lower-intermediate movers, but still satisfying for those with an advanced technical base. Whether you’re brushing up your technique or just want to stay moving mid-week, you’re welcome here.
Classes will be taught by BDJ company dancers, team members, or special guests in town for projects. We are aiming to start primarily with classical ballet technique, but we will also sometimes switch it up and offer a contemporary or improv class instead.
Class schedule (will be updated on an ongoing basis):
3rd September:
Ballet class with BDJ Artistic Director Carolyn Rose Ramsay
10th September:
Ballet class with Guest Teacher Markéta Pospíšilová
17th September:
Ballet class with BDJ Dancer Stanley Young
24th September:
Ballet class with BDJ Dancer Anna Daly
To keep this project sustainable:
Classes require a minimum of 4 dancers to be signed up by Monday evening (48 hours in advance) to run.
If the class doesn’t go ahead, those already booked will be offered a full refund or class credit.
We will not process requests for refunds or changes within the 48 hour period prior to a class.
This is a pilot—so we’re still ironing out the wrinkles. Your feedback is gold, and your patience is appreciated while we find our groove.
Come dance with us, and help shape what this becomes.
Single class: £15
5 class pass: £60

On Stage at JOH
Ballet d’Jèrri takes its first steps on the newly reopened Jersey Opera House stage with two of its most talked-about creations—marking the company’s first full evening at its new home.
Footsteps
Choreography by Garrett Smith
A poetic meditation on the fleeting intersections that shape our lives. Footsteps reflects on the brief but powerful collisions that brought Ballet d’Jèrri’s founding artists together—an ensemble formed across continents, caught in a shared moment of creation. Smith, known for his visceral, cinematic movement language, draws on his experience as a former dancer with Houston Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet to craft a piece that is both intimate and expansive.
Sand and Their Castles
Choreography by Tess Voelker
Witty, strange, and oddly tender—this BDJ favourite by Voelker captures the dizzying emotional logic of adolescence. Through a theatrical blend of movement, gesture, and absurdist charm, Sand and Their Castles invites us into a world where memory plays tricks and childhood slips away and re-emerges in unexpected forms. Voelker, a rising voice in contemporary dance and associate choreographer with the Paris Opera Ballet, crafts something at once deeply personal and universally resonant.

Under_Score
Ballet d’Jèrri invites you to an evening of world premieres with a classical twist.
Set to a curated thread of classical music, this programme brings together 7 short new works by artists who are already making their mark across the international dance scene. Fresh, formidable, future-facing choreographers taking on the work of heavyweight classical composers as their score.
Each piece offers a distinct take on musicality, structure, and expression. From stripped-back solos to ensemble bursts of energy, the programme showcases the versatility and vitality of a generation rethinking what ballet can be — without losing sight of where it came from.
Why This Matters
This is contemporary dance in conversation with its roots. For audiences, it’s a rare chance to encounter a range of voices in one evening, unified by the timeless pull of classical music and the thrill of something new taking shape.

Black Dog Noir
Black Dog Noir
Something haunts the cliffs of Bouley Bay.
Internationally acclaimed choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen is making his way to Jersey to sink his teeth into one of the island’s most mysterious legends — the infamous spectral hound that is said to stalk the north shore.
They say its glowing eyes and harrowing howls would appear before the worst of storms, sometimes driving unwitting smugglers to a violent doom, sometimes frightening fishermen back to the safe haven of their homes, saving them from a watery death. Angel or demon? Friend or foe? Good shepherd or harbinger of doom? The only constant is the fear that grips us as the Black Dog prowls by.
This abstract narrative will be part shadowed fairytale, part surrealist psychological thriller, inspired by folklore, island legends, and the wild landscapes of the psyche.
About Jeroen Verbruggen
Jeroen is a Belgian-born choreographer and former principal dancer, based in Berlin and widely celebrated across Europe. After training at Antwerp’s Royal Ballet School and Canada’s National Ballet School, he danced with the Royal Ballet of Flanders and spent a decade with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. He made his choreographic breakthrough in 2012 with Kill Bambi for Monte Carlo, a hit broadcast across Europe.
His full-length reinterpretation of The Nutcracker for Geneva Ballet became a repertory favorite, and he’s created bold work for companies including Ballet National de Marseille, National Dance Company Wales, Finnish National Ballet, Ballet Moscow, Staatsballett Hannover and more. Jeroen’s productions—ranging from the Hitchcock‑inspired Sciamachy to faithful yet fresh classics—have drawn acclaim for imaginative visual worlds and emotional intensity.

Witch Trials
Currently in development, this triptych of world premieres was inspired by one of Jersey’s darkest chapters—the island’s historical witch trials. Presented at the ancient site of La Hougue Bie, this triple bill featuring work from three cutting-edge voices in the global choreographic scene unearths stories of fear, persecution, and resilience, bringing the past to life through abstract narrative.
Inspiration & Historical Significance
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, accusations of witchcraft gripped Jersey, leading to trials, imprisonments, and executions. These events were shaped by superstition, social tensions, and shifting political landscapes, leaving a lasting imprint on the island’s history. But while these trials may seem like distant history, the impulse to scapegoat, to silence, and to fear those who do not conform is far from extinct. Here at home and across the world today, "witch hunts" are still present and taking many forms, from public shaming to the policing of identity, belief, and bodily autonomy.
At its core, the idea of a witch hunt forces us to question the very nature of what it means to be right or wrong, moral or amoral, just or unfair. Who decides the truth? Who wields the power to condemn? And how easily can you be convinced which side you should be on?
La Hougue Bie, one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric sites, provides a striking and symbolic setting for this production. With its layers of history—from Neolithic ritual site to medieval chapel—it stands as a powerful reminder of how myth and belief have shaped societies for centuries.
The Choreographers
Three visionary choreographers bring their unique artistic voices to this programme, offering distinct perspectives on the Jersey witch trials:
Katya Bourvis
Known for her emotionally charged movement language, Katya’s work unflinchingly examines the female experience within the witch trials, exploring how evolving societal structures conspired to suppress women’s voices. She leans into the uncomfortable truth that even those closest to us can become complicit in systems that restrict, repress, and isolate—and that monsters can be created by those who hunt them.
Vidya Patel
Drawing from the rhythmic and narrative traditions of Kathak, Vidya’s choreography explores the deep relationship between people, their land, and their stories—specifically, the charged landscape of Jersey. We are taken on a cycle of rupture and renewal, where pain gives rise to resistance, and something indomitable emerges from loss. Rooted in nature, memory, and ancestral echoes, the work honours resilience as something both individual and collective, ever turning, ever returning.
Cecilia Eliceche
Cecilia’s unapologetically minimalistic choreography emerges from deep research and lived experience, shaped by their identity as a campesina, a mother, and a Vodou practitioner. Their work interrogates the capitalist structure that made the witch trials possible—not through spectacle, but through patient, precise embodiment. This is choreography as ritual, as resistance, as reclamation.
Artistic Consultation
Dr. Adam Perchard, a Jersey-born artist and scholar, serves as artistic consultant for the project, bringing their deep knowledge of history, language, and performance to guide the creative process. Their expertise helps ground the production in rigorous research while allowing space for poetic reinterpretation.

In Paris: Goecke & Edeso
We are pleased to announce our first tour to France in April 2025.
The programme:
This double bill includes renowned German choreographer Marco Goecke’s Whiteout. The work premiered at Les Ballets de Monte Carlo in 2008, and has since been performed by companies all around the world. Set to music by Bob Dylan, this hauntingly bittersweet piece is the perfect introduction to the work of one of the giants of the dance industry and an incomparable artist.
The second half will bring back one of Ballet d’Jèrri’s first commissioned original works, Deliberate Mistake, a poetic reflection on Jersey’s history, identity, and collective memory. Co-created by resident choreographer Asier Edeso Eguia and artist Yulia Makeyeva, with an original score by Ilia Osokin, the work takes inspiration from Jersey’s knitting traditions—where deliberate flaws in knitted jumpers once helped identify lost sailors—transforming this idea into a deeply moving metaphor for community, fragility, and resilience.

IN Guernsey: Goecke & Edeso
We are pleased to announce we will be performing on our sister island in March 2025.

Open Studio with Boston Dance Theater
Under the co-artistic direction of Jessie Jeanne Stinnett and award winning, Dutch-Israeli, choreographer Itzik Galili, Boston Dance Theater (BDT) is Boston’s first contemporary dance repertory company with international ties at the leadership level. With a commitment to presenting works of socio-political relevance, BDT matches the talents of Boston-based dancers with those of acclaimed global choreographers, broadening the scope of contemporary dance practice and performance in their city.
With a shared vision and values, we are eager to explore collaborations between Jersey and Boston, so could not be more delighted to announce that they will be visiting us for a few days on the back of their tour in London this winter.
This event will be held in a very informal setting in our studio. Dancers from each company will perform a few excerpts from their respective repertoire, we will show you the results of the two workshop days we will have in the studio all together, and hear from both directors and both sets of dancers about the similarities and differences of our two companies, and our plans for our future collaboration.

Nova Movando
A semi-immersive performance experience at one of Jersey's most iconic locations!
The Show
Choreographer Yamuna Kyamo Huygen and musical duo Minihi are collaborating to create a dance piece designed around the relaxed vibes of the surf club where countless islanders came of age. The evening will feel more like a night out than a performance, as the dancers of Ballet d'Jerri take over the upper bar at the Splash with integrated dance segments interspersed with the chance to order a drink, chat with friends, and get your own dance rhythm on.
The title Nova Movando means “New Movement” in Esperanto, a universal language developed in 1887 that aimed to facilitate communication across cultures. Yamuna wanted to create a piece for trained dancers that felt more like that universal language of dance that every person feels anytime they step along to music. The beautifully simple concept is just to explore the relationship between colours and emotions, how our immediate, often subconscious, responses to hues are shaped by personal experiences and cultural narratives. Through a diverse range of movement styles and physical expressions, we explore the feelings that colours can evoke, highlighting the joy of individuality and honouring the beauty of each unique perspective that contributes to the vibrant tapestry of collective emotion.
The Schedule
If the weather is nice, arrive early and enjoy the sunset on your way in. Sunset time is 19:55 on Friday and 19:53 on Saturday and the tide will be mid and on its way out.
The audience will be welcomed into the space from 20:00. There will be a mix of live and recorded music from Minihi and their band.
The first dance piece will start around 20:15. No need to go anywhere or find a seat, each set will be 5-10 minutes long and they are designed to be experienced from wherever you are in the space.
Dance pieces will occur at intervals throughout the evening until 22:15. Recorded music will continue until Midnight.
Performances:
Exclusive private opening: 29th August 2024 at 20:00 (to inquire about tickets please get in touch at info@ballet.je)
The Location
Since 1954, Watersplash has been a surf hotspot; presenter of the coolest bands; backdrop to the evolving lives of Jersey's youth; and a synecdoche of the people of our island. Famous for drum and bass nights and chill sets from up-and-coming local bands on Sunday afternoons.
The Artists
Yamuna Huygen Kyamo is a multi-disciplinary dancer and choreographer from Belgium, renowned for her innovative Nova Movando method.
Yamuna's passion lies in the never-ending journey of discovering her own unique movement, constantly pushing the boundaries of various art forms such as waving, tutting, tricking, and contemporary dance. Her philosophy emphasizes that dance training should elevate people and liberate them to explore their own new movement using existing structures, rather than confining them to traditional boundaries.
Trained at the Royal Ballet School in Antwerp and having worked with the Opera Ballet of Flanders, Yamuna is now a dancer with the Anton Lachky Company. She has performed in the Kathak production ‘Women Speak’ in India with the Maya Sapera Company and has traveled extensively to train with dancers from different backgrounds and cultures. Over the past four years, she has also collaborated with Denis Inghelbrecht, a fellow multi-disciplinary tutting dancer and choreographer, to create new works.
Minihi is the creative outlet of percussionists and composers Zands and Louise Anna Duggan. The London-based musicians construct vivid soundscapes where the classical palette intersects with the world of groove and electronics. The pair have performed and recorded both individually and together with artists including Agnes Obel, Squid, Patrick Wolf, Melt Yourself Down, Lady Gaga, Thom Yorke, London Contemporary Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Kae Tempest, Dan Carey, Alex Somers and Nicholas Britell to name a few. They have also composed bespoke pieces for theatre, TV and film including ITV’s Tom Jones, BBC immersive Dr Who, and Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe. After releasing their debut track ‘Tokaido’ on the legendary Deutsche Grammophon label, they have since released two critically acclaimed albums, Recaptures (2021) and Stasis Loops (2023). Minihi will be joined in Jersey by composer and Multi-Instrumentalist Jay Chakravorty and Percussionist Calie Hough.
Minihi means sanctuary in ancient Breton French, and is the original name of a remote island reef near Louise’s birthplace of Jersey.

Geographers of Solitude—Jersey
We are joining forces with ŻfinMalta, the national dance company of Malta, in a new work by ŻfinMalta Artistic Director Paolo Mangiola. Twenty dancers come together to explore what unites the two islands through distinctive geographical and cultural landscapes.
Taking inspiration from the Arctic Tern, a bird known for having the longest migratory patterns on the planet, ‘Geographers of Solitude’ is a conversation on diversity, the fragility of different voices, and fostering collective harmony. Just as these birds take shelter on both islands during their long journey, the dancers on stage explore both itinerant and protracted island life and the dynamic interplay between solitude and communal, on our individual and collective narratives. It delves into the notion of islands as a microcosm of the world at large – a contained environment where its inhabitants develop unique cultures and ways of organising societies.
