Movando

The Piece

Welcome to Nova Movando, an immersive dance experience brought to life by choreographer Yamuna Kyamo Huygen in collaboration with musical duo Minihi. Tonight, the dancers of Ballet d'Jerri will transform the upper bar at the Splash into a vibrant, living canvas of movement and sound.

Inspired by the relaxed atmosphere of the island's surf culture, this piece offers a unique blend of performance and interaction. You won't just be watching the dancers – you'll be part of the experience. Throughout the evening, dance segments will flow seamlessly into moments where you can order a drink, chat with friends, and find your own unique rhythm.

The title Nova Movando, meaning "New Movement" in Esperanto, reflects Yamuna's vision to create a dance that transcends boundaries – much like the universal language Esperanto was intended to do. Here, dance becomes the language that speaks to everyone, no matter their background.

This beautifully simple yet profound concept delves into the emotional connections we have with colour. Through dynamic choreography, the performance explores how colours evoke feelings influenced by personal experiences and cultural narratives. As you watch the dancers express these emotions through movement, you'll see how each unique perspective adds to a shared, collective experience.

Prepare for a night where the lines between performer and audience blur, where the art of dance meets the heart of community

How does colour happen, first of all? Why this seems to be white right now, is because when the light falls on it, it reflects all of it. So it looks white. Why does this seem to be red? It’s not because it’s red, it’s just that it holds back all the colours and only reflects red, that’s why you are seeing red. And what is red for you may not be red for some other creature. So colour is not what it is, colour is what it gives away. What you reflect will be your colour. What you hold will not be your colour. This is the nature of life, not just of colour. This is the nature of life itself. Today if you radiate love, people will see you as a loving human being.

The CompanY

Ballet d’Jèrri launched in January of 2023, a company of professional dancers committed to bringing a high level of dance performances to Jersey islanders from all walks of life. The company is the first of its kind to be based in the Channel Islands, and our aim is to create great art that represents and belongs to our island.

Our two primary objectives go hand-in-hand: Raising the bar and pushing the boundaries of dance performances in Jersey and from Jersey around the world, and investing in the future of our island through its children. Our education programme, which has already been delivered to thousands of school children in our first two years, takes no funding from the education budget and is offered for free to non-fee paying schools. Its aim is to work alongside curriculum to nurture well-rounded, confident young people who believe in their own potential for personal success and meaningful contribution to their community. In order to make this programme what it is, our artistic work needs to be of the highest possible standard, with our dancers constantly reminding themselves of the example they are setting both with the quality of the work they deliver and in their characters of discipline, tenacity, and camaraderie that are on display when they are observed in the work environment.

When you support us by attending an event like this evening’s or by making a donation, we hope you will realise that you are not only investing in what we hope is a great night out for you and your friends and family. You are becoming part of a long-term vision, and a thriving future for our island with art that is accessible to all at its heart.

The Movement

Yamuna Huygen Kyamo is a multi-disciplinary dancer and choreographer from Belgium, known for her innovative Nova Movando method.

Yamuna's passion lies in the never-ending journey of discovering her own unique movement, constantly pushing the boundaries of various art forms such as waving, tutting, tricking, and contemporary dance. Her philosophy emphasizes that dance training should elevate people and liberate them to explore their own new movement using existing structures, rather than confining them to traditional boundaries.

Trained at the Royal Ballet School in Antwerp and having worked with the Opera Ballet of Flanders, Yamuna is now a dancer with the Anton Lachky Company. She has performed in the Kathak production Women Speak in India with the Maya Sapera Company and has traveled extensively to train with dancers from different backgrounds and cultures. Over the past four years, she has also collaborated with Denis Inghelbrecht, a fellow multi-disciplinary tutting dancer and choreographer, to create new works.

The Music

Minihi

Minihi is the creative outlet of percussionists and composers Zands and Louise Anna Duggan. The London-based musicians construct vivid soundscapes where the classical palette intersects with the world of groove and electronics. The pair have performed and recorded both individually and together with artists including Agnes Obel, Squid, Patrick Wolf, Melt Yourself Down, Lady Gaga, Thom Yorke, London Contemporary Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Kae Tempest, Dan Carey, Alex Somers and Nicholas Britell to name a few. After releasing their debut track ‘Tokaido’ on the legendary Deutsche Grammophon label, they have since released two critically acclaimed albums, Recaptures (2021) and Stasis Loops (2023). Minihi will be joined in Jersey by composer and Multi-Instrumentalist Jay Chakravorty and Percussionist Calie Hough.

Minihi means sanctuary in ancient Breton French, and is the original name of the remote island reef near Louise’s birthplace of Jersey that you may know as the Minquiers.

Jay Chakravorty

Jay is a modern classical composer and multi-instrumentalist, based in London. He writes instrumental music for pianos, analogue/modular synths, and string ensembles.

Since releasing his debut album "A Map With No Memory" on Berlin label Unperceived Records, he has been featured as a pick for "Best New Music" on BBC 6 Music, and received regular airplay from 6 Music, BBC Radio 3, BBC Wales, Radio X, and KEXP Seattle, performing live sessions for both Radio X and The Line Of Best Fit. He has been nominated for The Welsh Music Prize and the UK Music Producers Guild awards, and has received support from PRS Foundation, Arts Council England and Help Musicians. He is also an in-demand media composer, creating music for plays, adverts, shorts, and feature films.

Jay is currently working on recording his second album.

the art

Sami Eldirdiry Osman (aka KUMO) is a British/Sudanese artist who has been involved in the graffiti scenes of England, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. He is a graffiti artist first and foremost and a key member of Jersey's IKM crew.

His graffiti murals and paintings are directly influenced by the hip hop cultures of the '80s and '90s from which contemporary graffiti styles emerged - he uses bright colours to create expressive and vibrant portraits, refering to them as 'fine art in a graffiti style'.
